Wise Words

  • We've uncovered some embarrassing ancestors in the not-too-distant past. Some horse thieves, and some people killed on Saturday nights. One of my relatives, unfortunately, was even in the newspaper business.

  • He who has no fools, knaves, or beggars in his family was begot by a flash of lightning.

    Mark Twain

    Unknown

  • There are only two lasting bequests we can give our children - one is roots, and the other, wings.
    Hodding S. Carter

  • In all of us there is a hunger, marrow deep, to know our heritage - to know who we are and where we came from. Without this enriching knowledge, there is a hollow yearning. No matter what our attainments in life, there is still a vacuum, an emptiness, and the most disquieting loneliness.

Remington Nature Center and Genealogy?

Who would have thought that an item of genealogical significance would be found at a nature center?

While visiting the Remington Nature Center recently, a display of old Peace Medals came to my attention. Peace Medals were given by agents of the U.S. Government to the chiefs of Native American tribes as a display of their honorable intentions when negotiating. Each president had their own unique design. In the display case there is an example of a George Washington Peace Medal. Accompanying it is a letter from the Smithsonian, authenticating the medal in 1907. What caught my eye was that the letter was addressed to one J. F. Quinn ~ and I knew at once this was the grandfather of our very own NWMGS member, based on previous research that we had completed on this family! The museum has been most gracious in assisting with information regarding the artifact. It just goes to show there is genealogical information in the least likely of places!

Visit Remington Nature Center website for more information on their wonderful programs!
