Wise Words

  • We are the children of many sires, and every drop of blood in us in its turn ... betrays its ancestor.
    Ralph Waldo Emerson

  • We've uncovered some embarrassing ancestors in the not-too-distant past. Some horse thieves, and some people killed on Saturday nights. One of my relatives, unfortunately, was even in the newspaper business.
    Jimmy Carter
    Former U.S. President

  • In all of us there is a hunger, marrow deep, to know our heritage - to know who we are and where we came from. Without this enriching knowledge, there is a hollow yearning. No matter what our attainments in life, there is still a vacuum, an emptiness, and the most disquieting loneliness.
    Alex Haley, Roots

  • Life is lived forwards, but understood backwards.
    Unknown

  • Why waste your money looking up your family tree? Just go into politics and your opponents will do it for you.
    Mark Twain

  • He who has no fools, knaves, or beggars in his family was begot by a flash of lightning.
    English Proverb

  • There are only two lasting bequests we can give our children - one is roots, and the other, wings.

A Bit About Us

Carol Almanza - Carol is a life-long resident of St. Joseph. She is very interested in the history of the city, its architecture and its people, which was a natural transition to an interest in genealogy. She has been volunteering at the library for 10 years. Carol loves the detective work that is involved with genealogy. She is a retired RN, with 4 children and 4 grandchildren. Carol serves on the board of the Mt. Mora Preservation and Restoration Association and is a member of the St. Joseph Historical Society.

Kenneth Cox - Kenny has been involved in genealogy for more than 35 years. He and his sister, Doris Lett, attended a genealogy class at Missouri Western State College and became founding members of the NWMGS. Kennny was a plumber by trade. He was born and raised in St. Joseph. He is married with 5 children and 15 grandchildren. Kenny also served his country in the Army.

Connie McCoy - Connie has been involved with genealogy for 10 years. She has been volunteering at the library since 2003, and has been the librarian at the NWMGS since 2005. She was a former teacher in the Rushville and Atchison school districts. Apart from genealogy she enjoys the pursuit of Volkswalking, bowling and visiting the courthouses of each county in Kansas. Connie is Treasurer of the Friends of Atchison Library, Treasurer of the Atchison Area Association of Retired School Personnel and the Secretary of the Atchison County Kansas Genealogical Society (ACKGS). She has 3 children and 3 grandchildren.

Betty Williams Anslinger Betty was a charter member of the NWMGS. She began her genealogy research over 30 years ago. After taking time away to raise her children and care for her parents, she has returned to the pursuit in full-swing. As Vice President, Betty is responsible for finding speakers and coordinating the quarterly meetings. She is sometimes retired and spends much time with her granddaughter. She is also a member of the St. David's Welsh Society of Greater Kansas City and the Great Plains Welsh Heritage Project in Wymore, NE, the Caldwell County Historical Society and the Ray County Genealogical Society.

Kelly Alvarado Kelly started the quest for her family history in March of 2008. As a transplant to St. Joseph, she decided help the folks in her adopted home city by volunteering at NWMGS starting in October of 2009. She has taken the lead on the database project and was recently elected President. Kelly has a wonderful husband and three children.
