Fall 2017 Newsletter
Access to Members Only Section
Our members have online access to our newsletters, journals, publication indexes and more.
If you're not yet a member of the NWMGS, it's easy to become one! Just fill out the application and put the check in the mail!
If you are a member who accessed these resources prior to the site re-design in July 2017, you'll need to register to continue to take advantage of this benefit.
We will be discontinuing the ability for members to register via the website, effective immediately. We are having to sift through hundreds of bogus registrations and delete them. Despite an abundance of caution, it's possible that actual members are being deleted.
Also, if you are registered but haven't accessed the site in over a year, you may be deleted or disabled from the users database. If this happens, just contact Kris to renew your access.
If you are a member and desire access to the members only sections, please send an email to Kris and include your membership information. She will add you to the users member list and send you a temporary password. It is very important you change this password as soon as possible to prevent anyone else from using your account and possibly getting YOU banned.

The Pumpkin Song
The Pumpkin Song is a tradition handed down in the King family, presumably via their North Carolina roots. If you've ever heard this song, or a version of it, please let us know. If you are a registered member of the NWMGS you can read the story about this song in the Spring 2016 edition of The Journal.

World War II Veterans
The NWMGS is working to compile information on every soldier from northwest Missouri that served in World War II. The goal is to publish a book in late 2015, preserve the historical information, and share the results online for future generations of researchers.
In January of 1944 the St. Joseph News-Press published a list of nearly 7000 soldiers that were from Buchanan County. In that publication, they also included a call for any missed names, and published them in the subsequent weeks, and included those from the surrounding areas. These lists will serve as the basis of our project. We hope to document what happened to each and every one of them, and need your help.
If you would like to contribute information on the World War II veteran in your family, please fill out the form and send it in. We understand the list is far from complete, so there may be hundreds or thousands of other servicemen to be added.

Can you help us spread the word at your place of worship, place of employment, business or with other groups? We would greatly appreciate ANY help!

State Hospital #2
The NWMGS receives many questions about the State Hospital #2, as there were literally thousands of people who passed through her doors as either patients or employees. We are happy to offer assistance to those researching in this particular area. There is a process by which some records can be obtained, and a wonderful booklet about the hospital itself, which was produced by the St. Joseph Museums, Inc. The booklet is an easy read, 24 pages, soft cover and just $8. You can pick one up at the NWMGS library during any of our open hours. Not in the immediate area? We'll be happy to mail one to you ~ just include an extra $1 for shipping & handling.
A complete list of the probate files available at the NWMGS for Buchanan County is now available. This list was several years in the making. Each of the boxes of files were gone through, one at a time, and our old index was updated. That process alone took almost 5 years. Then we began the task of retyping the entire list and adding all the new names we ran across, and verifying the spelling of many others. At last we have a finished product to be proud of - with over 43,000 names!! If you would like to take a peek at the contents of any one of these files, email us: email@example.com The file is 2.78MB so it may take a minute to load . . . be patient. Remember to check all possible spellings!
